As a school liaison, I research and develop workshop presentations and activities for teachers on different aspects of library resources and skills that they can use in the classroom. I model activities that teachers can do with their students. We discuss what to do with kids who are not getting it, kids who are jumping ahead and bored, and all the activities are aligned to CCSS and usually come with full lesson plans or a description of the small activity.
CPDUs I have led so far:
October 29, 2013
New Nonfiction: booktalked nonfiction published within the past two years in every Dewey section that have won awards and appeared on top lists for teaching in all subject areas and how to connect to lessons.

April 23, 2014
The Elementary Research Process (part 1): two hour workshop focusing on teaching “reading informational text” skills for research projects K-6. We practice standard-based activities, handout graphic organizers, and discuss differentiation for each skill. The goal of this workshop is to present lessons that will help students locate and interpret their research from a multitude of sources.

Fall 2014
The Elementary Research Process (part 2): A second workshop will be offered in the fall that delves deeper into the research process: when to summarize, paraphrase or quote (and how); how to evaluate websites; how to fact check (at the elementary level); organizing notes; and forming outlines. The goal of this workshop is to present lessons that will help students integrate information into their own original projects.
Feedback from teachers that attended my CPDU workshops:
"Wow! Thanks Rachel! I appreciate your quick response to my request. [..] Your presentation today was amazing and impressive! You had very valuable information, resources, and activities that you shared with us that will enable us to effectively teach our children informative reading and writing skills that are aligned with the C.C.S.S. Can you please send me a copy of your power point presentation from today's workshop? Also, I just wanted to let you know that you are doing such an excellent job as School Liaison this year. We are so lucky to have you!" - Karen Lincoln, 2nd grade teacher
“The best features of this [CPDU] were resources that can be used and how to use them with CCSS connections. Great ideas!”
“[I liked] trying out the activities. The activities are simple, effective, and will be easy to do at any time.”
“I loved the activities! Hands on is awesome.”
“The best features of this [CPDU] were actual activities that we can take back to our classroom and use tomorrow.”
“The best features of this [CPDU] were working together with other teachers and the ideas to help students understand informational text. Keep the programs coming! I learn so much.”
“I can use everything [presented] in my class – very easy to understand- relate back to standards – I really enjoyed it – really knew material. I look forward to part two.”
“The best features of this [CPDU] were the resources you provided; the organizers to use with our students; activities that we practiced to use in our classroom; mentor texts that can help teach informational text and how to write it too! Excellent presentation and activities aligned to the CCSS to help us teach informative writing effectively. Fantastic organization and presentation on informative writing. Everything you had available was very beneficial in helping us to be effective teachers in our classrooms.”
